HD Technical Requirements

Settings for programs appearing on MNN's HD Community Channel (MNN5)

MNN HD files must be recorded in HD and saved using the following settings:

  • Format: .mp4, .mov, or .wmv

  • Resolution: 1920x1080

  • Frame Rate: 29.97 fps 

Please only upload HD files. If your program also appears on one of our SD channels, we will convert all HD media to SD for proper cablecast.

If you do not upload your file in HD we cannot broadcast it on MNN's HD Channel.

Short-form programs must be HD files. No Short-form SD files will be accepted for air.


  • Short-form and 28-minute program files must not exceed 4 gigabytes in size
  • 58-minute program files must not exceed 8 gigabytes in size

Note: Uploading HD files takes longer than uploading SD files. In order to meet our media submission deadlines, please be prepared to allow for extra upload time.

SD Technical Requirements

Settings for programs appearing on MNN1, MNN2, MNN3, or MNN4

MNN Community Producers whose programs will appear on MNN1, MNN2, MNN3, or MNN4 can upload in HD or SD, depending on how your program was originally recorded.

If your program was recorded in SD, you must use the following settings:

  • Format: MP4, MOV or WMV

  • NTSC Standard Definition (SD)

  • Size/Resolution: 720x480i in a 4:3 aspect ratio

  • Frame Rate: 29.97 fps

  • Audio Sample Rate: 48.0 kHz

If your program was recorded in HD, you must convert to SD using the following settings:

  • Format: MP4, MOV or WMV

  • Resolution: 1920 x 1080 

  • Frame Rate: 29.97 fps

  • Audio Sample Rate: 48.0 kHz

Short-form programs must be HD files. No Short-form SD files will be accepted for air.

File Naming Conventions

For series and promo submissions please “save file as” one of the following naming conventions:
  • Series (regularly scheduled weekly, bi-weekly, monthly program) 

    • Projectnumber_airdate.filetype (If your project number is 12345 and your airdate is January 1, your filename would be: 12345_0101.filetype).

  • Promo:

    • Promo_ProjectNumber.filetype (If your project number is 12345, your filename would be: Promo_12345.filetype).

If you do not know, or have not received your project ID, contact the Programming Department at program@mnn.org

 

If you are uploading a pilot, single or short, no project number is needed. Please “save file as” one of the following:
  • Single:
    • single_showtitle.filetype
  • Pilot Episode (ONLY the first episode of a Series):
    • pilot_showtitle.filetype
  • Short Form Content:
    • short_showtitle.filetype

Due Dates

All submissions are due four business days before they are scheduled to air*.

Media submitted after the due date will be cablecast on the next scheduled airdate.

Tuesday digital submissions are due on Friday by 8:00 pm

Wednesday and Thursday digital submissions are due on Monday by 8:00 pm

Friday digital submissions are due on Tuesday by 8:00 pm

Saturday digital submissions are due on Wednesday by 8:00 pm

Sunday  and Monday digital submissions are due on Thursday at 8:00 pm

*Any show submitted after the time indicated above will be considered as submitted on the next business day. If the due date falls on a holiday, media are due the business day before the holiday. MNN observes all national holidays.

Shows Produced at MNN Studios

All producers utilizing MNN’s facilities and equipment to produce their show must include a closing graphic at the end of their show that reads “Produced in conjunction with MNN.”

Upload Stations

On-Site Media Upload (Reserve via Email)

  • Email production@mnn.org to reserve an upload station.
  • Please indicate your preferred location, date, and time (see below). 
  • Reservations must be made at least 24 hours in advance and your reservation must be confirmed by MNN staff prior to your visit. 

Available locations & times: 

  MNN at 38th St. (W 38th St.)
    • Mon-Fri, 2:00pm-9pm

  El Barrio Firehouse (E. 104th St.)
     • Tue-Fri, 2:00pm-9:00pm
     • Sat, 11:00am-5:00pm

Using WeTransfer

We accept WeTransfer as an alternate solution. 
 
Note: The free version of this service has a 2GB file size limit, and may not work for programs intended for our HD Channel.

  1. Visit www.wetransfer.com
  2. Attach your file 
  3. For Series email medialibrary@mnn.org. For a Single/ Pilot email programforms@mnn.org
  4. When prompted to enter “Your Email” please submit your email address.
  5. Message: This field is optional and can be used to add a message to the Tape Library.
  6. Hit the “Transfer” button and wait until the progress bar indicates 100%.

You will receive a confirmation email once the upload is complete and a second confirmation email once we have downloaded the file you submitted.
