MNN El Barrio Firehouse To Host Seven Women in Movement/ 7 Mujeres en Movimiento

In celebration of Puerto Rican Heritage Month, Manhattan Neighborhood Network’s East Harlem location will kick off a two-year New York City exhibition tour.

New York, June 6, 2016 – On Friday, June 10 from 6-8 pm, the MNN El Barrio Firehouse Community Media Center (175 East 104th Street, btw Lex & 3rd) will host a free public event to kickoff Seven Women in Movement/ 7 Mujeres en Movimiento, a two-year art exhibition in New York City that celebrates Puerto Rican pride, culture, and history via various artistic genres.

The evening will include an interview with the artists Minerva Gonzalez, Myrna Nieves, Tanya Torres, Carmen Ayala, Yarisa Colon, Zaadia Colon, and curator Taina Traverso, as well as a poem describing the essence of the "7 Mujeres en Movimiento / 7 Women in Movement.” The program will be recorded for future cablecast on MNN.

“We are happy to host this groundbreaking exhibit,” said Firehouse Director Zenaida Mendez, “We are excited to kick off a weekend of celebrating Puerto Rican culture and heritage in New York City.”

On Sunday, June 12 New York City expects over 1.5 million spectators for the 59th annual Puerto Rican Day Parade up Fifth Avenue.

The June 10 event at the MNN El Barrio Firehouse is free and open to the public, and Seven Women in Movement/ 7 Mujeres en Movimiento will be on display at the Firehouse through September 15, 2016.

In 2012, MNN opened a state-of-the-art community media center at the old Engine Co. 53 Firehouse on East 104th Street in East Harlem. The facility features three HD production studios, including a three-camera studio, as well as editing services and a Youth Media Center. The Firehouse offer classes in English and Spanish and hosts community events throughout the year.
