Jazz Appreciation Month, initially launched in 2001 by The Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History, commemorates the rich culture, music, and heritage of  jazz. April was chosen due to the significant birthdays of renowned jazz icons like Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, and Herbie Hancock.
